TruePaw beef tongue is made from fresh meat of Latvian origin using freeze-drying. The product is first frozen, after which moisture is removed under vacuum through sublimation. This process helps preserve the natural taste, aroma, and nutritional value.

If your pet sniffs treats and walks away, tongue is the product to start with. It is muscle meat with a naturally richer flavor than heart or lean muscle meat. During freeze-drying, the aroma is not lost but concentrated — and that is often what determines whether a treat gets eaten or left in the bowl.

What is the texture of freeze-dried beef tongue?

After freeze-drying, the tongue becomes dry, porous, and brittle - it breaks easily and has a crunchy texture when chewed rather than being soft and juicy as it is when fresh. This porous structure also makes it easy to digest and allows the pieces to be broken into smaller portions with little effort.

Is the treat ground or a whole piece?

It is a whole piece, not ground or shaped. The tongue is sliced and freeze-dried while preserving the natural structure of the meat. There is just one ingredient: beef tongue.

Is beef tongue suitable for dogs with allergies?

The product contains only one protein source, with no grains or additives, so it can be suitable for sensitive pets. However, keep in mind that beef itself is one of the more common allergens. Why does beef tongue cost more than other treats?

Tongue is a relatively small cut - there is only a limited amount from each animal, and the raw ingredient itself is more expensive than many other organ meats. In addition, meat loses most of its weight during freeze-drying as the water is removed, so 60 g of finished dry product comes from a significantly larger amount of fresh meat.

What is the difference between freeze-dried and dried?

Freeze-drying takes place without heat: the product is first frozen, and then, under vacuum, the ice turns directly into vapor without passing through a liquid state. This helps preserve almost all of the nutritional value, natural flavor, and aroma, while making the meat porous and lightweight. Conventional drying, or dehydration, uses heat in the range of 50-70 °C. The final product is denser and firmer, and some heat-sensitive vitamins are lost during the process.
